Ibri – Residents of Yanqul have joined forces with the government to finance a flood protection wall to safeguard the wilayat’s agricultural lands. Valued at RO365,000, the project will see the local community contributing 80% of the total cost, while Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) will fund the rest.
The ministry signed an agreement for the initiative – which aims to protect fertile soil, prevent crop damage caused by floods and reduce agricultural losses – on Monday.
Salim bin Ali al Amrani, Director General of Agriculture and Water Resources in Dhahirah, said, “The wall will preserve agricultural land and ensure vital resources remain available to local farmers.”
The structure, designed to strengthen the governorate’s resilience to flooding, is expected to encourage farmers to increase production, and boost supply of Omani produce in local and international markets.
Spanning 1,700m in length, the flood protection wall will have a 1.5m deep foundation and width of 2.5m, with the main structure rising to a height of 6.5m. Constructed with reinforced concrete, it will adhere to technical standards approved by ministry engineers, who will oversee its construction.
